About the Authors

Peter Cappelli is the George W. Taylor Professor of Management and director of the Center for Human Resources at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford, and he conducts research in human resources practices, talent and performance management, and public policy related to employment. He is the editor of Academy of Management Perspectives, and the author of The New Deal at Work: Managing the Market-Driven Workforce and Talent on Demand: Managing Talent in an Age of Uncertainty. Cappelli is also one of HR Magazine’s Top 20 Most Influential International Thinkers of 2011.


Harbir Singh is the William and Phyllis Mack Professor of Management and co-director of the Mack Center for Technological Innovation at the Wharton School. He has been Chair of the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the Academy of Management, and is Chair of Wharton’s Management Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and a PhD from the University of Michigan. He is widely published in the areas of strategy, governance, acquisitions, joint ventures, and restructuring and is the coeditor of Innovations in International and Cross-Cultural Management.

Jitendra Singh is the Saul P. Steinberg Professor of Management at the Wharton School, where he previously served as Vice Dean for International Academic Affairs. From 2007 to 2009, he was Dean and Shaw Foundation Chair Professor of Strategy, Management and Organization at the Nanyang Business School of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He holds an MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and a PhD from Stanford University. His earlier research has focused on evolutionary approaches to strategy and organization, organizational change, business process outsourcing, and the Indian software services sector. He has coauthored several books, including Emerging Multinationals in Emerging Markets, and he has served on the boards of several companies, from established firms to start-ups, including Infosys Technologies and Emcure Pharmaceuticals in India and, more recently, SPRING Singapore and has been on the board of governors of SAFTI Military Institute in Singapore.


Michael Useem is the William and Jacalyn Egan Professor of Management and director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management at the Wharton School. He holds a PhD from Harvard University, and his research has focused on leadership, decision making, governance, and corporate change. He has presented leadership development programs in India, China, and elsewhere, and with Harbir Singh and Jitendra Singh has offered an annual program on corporate governance in Mumbai. He is the author of several books on leadership, including The Inner Circle , Investor Capitalism and The Leadership Moment.
